Negotiation Highlights
The Africa Group of Negotiators (AGN) has consistently advocated for Africa's interests in global climate negotiations. Below are some key highlights of our positions and achievements:
-
COP29:
At COP29 in Baku, several key outcomes benefited Africa, including a commitment to triple climate finance for developing countries to $300 billion annually by 2035, though still below the $1.3 trillion African nations sought. The Loss and Damage Fund was operationalized to provide financial assistance for climate-induced losses, while finalized rules for international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement offer Africa new investment opportunities. There was also a strong focus on adaptation and resilience, emphasizing the need for sustainable, grant-based funding to address Africa’s climate vulnerabilities.
-
UNFCCC Meetings: Acknowledged Africa's disproportionate vulnerability to climate change. Initiatives like Greenovations Africa have been launched to foster green entrepreneurship across the continent, particularly empowering women and youth.
-
COP27: Establishment of the Loss and Damage fund to assist developing countries, particularly in Africa, in addressing the adverse effects of climate change. This fund aims to provide financial support for recovery and rebuilding efforts following climate-induced disasters.
